Great Christmassy Wines
So you know what wines will pair best with your Christmas dinner, but what about the perfect wine to enjoy, curled up by the fire, throughout the whole festive season? Luckily, this week we have rounded up five of our favourite wines – three wintery reds, one lovely New Zealand white, and a fresh, Provençale rosé – which will pair beautifully with your favourite seasonal food, but will also work perfectly as an aperitif.
This lovely organic red is a wonderful match for your Christmas turkey, but is also complex enough to stand on its own. Clos Henri’s second wine, each grape is hand-harvested to ensure uniform ripeness and selected from all the grapes not used in the top cuvee. These carefully-chosen grapes then undergo a week-long regime of cold-soaking and plunging, before being transferred to open-top tanks for a cool fermentation. For the final stage, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 10 months before it is ready to enjoy. The Petit Clos Pinot Noir displays delicate hints of plum and cherry, cinnamon and clove. There is a pleasant earthiness to it, with this 2014 vintage beginning to show some secondary Pinot aromatics of grilled mushroom and undergrowth.
Our second Pinot Noir is fruit-forward, well-balanced, and produced biodynamically. This delightful red made in New Zealand’s famous Marlborough region is created using grapes from two different valleys – Brancott and the Wairau. Consequently, the grapes are from a mixture of old and new vines – some over twenty years old, others not even ten. Again, the grapes are all picked by hand, destemmed and added to the tank where they are inoculated with wine yeast after four days. They are left to ferment for two weeks before the wine is pressed off the skins, settled and barrelled up for the final stage – maturation. Huia’s 2013 Pinot Noir has smoky, savoury aromas with hints of black red fruits. The palate displays dark cherry, blackberry, spice, chocolate, and vanilla pod, meaning it pairs well with rare beef, roast pork or lamb, making it the perfect wine for the Christmas holidays.
Our third and final red comes from the Languedoc region and is made from Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan Noir grapes. Vegan and organic, this red has fine tannins and an expressive nose, with aromas of cassis, black olives and wild herbs. It has a lovely freshness to it, and delicious fruit and savoury notes which pair very well with seared duck, rabbit, barbecued sausages, or simply a good book!
A range of soil profiles, meso-climates and vineyard practices combine to create this complex sustainable Sauvignon. Blended from 16 base wines from all across the Wairau valley, this wine sings with notes of herbs and tropical fruit – grapefruit, lemon, blackcurrant and nectarine. On the nose there are aromas of grapefruit peel, bitter lemon, currant, guava, nettle and sweet herbs, intermingling with smoky and stone-like mineral notes. The mouthfeel is rounded with a good weight and a certain creaminess added by the barrel ferment components. This wine is a perfect pair for oysters or other seafood, but all you really need to enjoy it…is a glass!
Finally, this Provençal Rosé is a real gem, from its pale salmon hue, to its fine, soft, multi-layered nose, with notes of crushed strawberries, banana, apricot and dried fruit. Made organically and fully vegan from a combination of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah grapes, the balanced palate is light and sophisticated, ending with notes of candied fruit (that great Christmas staple). It pairs well with food from its native Provence but is a truly marvellous aperitif as well.
